Another sure sign spring is officially here, aside from all the rain, is opening day of the Calgary Stampeders official training camp.  Rookie camp started this past week but the rest of the squad straps on the pads for the first time this Sunday, June 3 at McMahon at 9:05 AM and 4:20 PM.

This season marks the beginning of a new era for the red and white with the departure of all-stars Henry Burris and Joffrey Reynolds, thrusting Drew Tate and John Cornish, who seized the reigns last year, into the limelight.

There will be some great battles at this year’s camp and Sunday’s action will be your first opportunity to scout your favourite players and positions.

For more information about the training camp schedule or the team in general, go to the Stampeders official website and training camp information page.

See you down at McMahon!

Good news for the struggling Calgary and Alberta motion picture industry as city council has approved $10M in funding for the construction of the Alberta Creative Hub film facility which will be located in NW Calgary at Canada Olympic Park.  The $30M+ motion picture production complex will house sound stages, production studios, office space as well as facilities to develop interactive media and new technology.
There has been a dire shortage of studio space in Calgary over the past decade, an issue that was further exacerbated with the redevelopment of the previous makeshift Currie Barracks studio.  The city and the province have lost numerous productions over the past few years due to the lack of adequate studio space and post-production facilities.
The city contribution is just the first step in what will most likely be a long funding process as the Alberta Creative Hub Corporation, a non-profit group formed to oversee the plans for the complex, is still seeking over $15M in additional funding from the provincial and federal governments.
For more information about the Alberta Creative Hub click on the links below to read the full Calgary Herald article and the official press release from Calgary Economic Development.

Another great Best of Calgary NW family-friendly event is coming up this weekend as Sesame Street Live returns to the Jubilee Auditorium with the production 'Elmo's Healthy Heroes'.
The unthinkable has happened as Super Grover has lost his super powers and the fair residents of Sesame Street find themselves in need of a hero.  Never fear, as there is rarely ever a problem on 'The Street' that can't be solved with a catchy tune, a little dance and and of course a healthy dose of cooperation, and Elmo and his team of Healthy Heroes are up to the challenge!
The show focuses on teaching lessons of healthy habits through song and dance, Elmo, Abby Cadabby and the entire Sesame Street entourage (not including E and Turtle) explore exercise, nutrition, sleep/energy and hygiene all in a quest to put the super back in Super Grover.
Show times for the production are Friday, July 29th at 7:00PM, Saturday, July 30th at 10:30AM and 2:00PM and wrapping up Sunday, July 31st at 1:00PM and 4:30PM.
Tickets can be purchased in person or online at all Ticketmaster locations.  For more information on the production and ticket sales click on the links below.

The weather has finally agreed to smarten up and it looks like it's just in time for this weekend's numerous Canada Day events and celebrations!
The big event The Best of Calgary NW is of course focusing on is the official start to the 2011 Calgary Stampeders regular season as our hometown heroes take on the Toronto Argonauts.  It's a clash of last season's lowest-scoring team vs. the league's highest scoring know which side of the scale we were on.  Despite the anemic scoring stats the Boatmen did turn things around last season sporting an even 9-9 record and splitting their two games with the Stamps, so coming out of the gate fresh it will be a good test for Hufnagel and company.
If the attraction of the Big Red Machine stomping all over the Double-Blue isn't incentive enough, then make sure to make a day of it and come out to the Canada Day Kickoff Pre-Game Bash open to all ticket holders and taking place across the parking lot at Foothills Stadium from 4-6 PM.
The Pre-Game Bash has all the required ingredients for a great afternoon; live music, great BBQ, the Outriders and Stampeders Alumni appearances.  Your only way into the party is with your game day ticket so if you don't have one go out and get yourself one!
For more information about the mathcup, the pregame festivities and tickets click on the link below and visit the Stampeder official website.

The start of another busy season at McMahon Stadium is upon us as the Calgary Stampeders take to the turf for their first pre-season action of the year against the BC Lions.
The Stampeders finished the year in first place at 13-5 while the Leos needed a three-game wiining streak to end the year finishing at 8-10 and laying claim to the third playoff spot in the West.  But as always, last year is forgotten and as of right now everyone is in first place...and they still will be after the game is over for that matter.
It will be a great chance to view some of the key battles for positions on both sides of the ball and of course the first chance to see some excellent live CFL action.
Kickoff is at 7 PM and tickets are available.  For more infrormation about the game, tickets and the marquee positional battles coming out of training camp click on the link to go to the Stampeders game preview page.

Another great Best of Calgary NW outdoor event is set for this weekend as the Mountain Equipment Co-op Bikefest Calgary goes at Edworthy Park on Saturday from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

As described by MEC the event is “a daylong community celebration of all things bicycle related. Our goal is to bring together Calgary’s bicycle community and those new to bikes, to celebrate the wonders of cycling. Come join us and make it the best bicycle bash in Calgary.”

Included in the day’s festivities are events and activities for every age and skill level of biking enthusiasts:

      - MEC Bikefest Marketplace (buy bikes, cycling gear, clothing, food, and more)

      - Demo bikes

      - Bike decorating crafts for kids

      - Free riding clinics with local cycling clubs

      - Bike Swap

      - Bike tune-ups

      - Self-guided cycling scavenger hunt

      - 101 info sessions: touring, racing, fitness, etc.

      - Prizes (including a MEC skyway bike!)

      - Charity bike drop-off

The event is completely free...unless of course you buy something (come on, nothing is completely free!), and is scheduled to go rain or shine so let’s hope there is more shine than rain. You don’t need to have a bike to participate as there will be bike-less activities and of course demo bikes to take a spin on as well.

For more information about MEC Bikefest Calgary, click on the link below to visit the event page with all the additional details and information.

Another great event is happening this weekend as the 2011 Mitsubishi Motors Calgary City Chase goes on Saturday, June 11.  The event starts and finishes at Eau Claire, which is obviously not in the NW, however the chase itself will undoubtedly travel through our quadrant of the city throughout the course of the day.

The City Chase is a unique 4-6 hour urban adventure where 2-person teams will run, walk and use public transit to navigate their way throughout the city, while calling family and friends for help, accessing the Internet, and even employing assistance of total strangers.  Teams must rely on their resourcefulness, determination and quick-thinking as they search for ChasePoints scattered in unknown locations throughout the Calgary. ChasePoints are designed to test teams with a variety of physical, intellectual, adventurous and of course, humorous challenges.

The first team to complete the required ChasePoints and cross the finish line wins the event and earns the right to represent Calgary at the City Chase National Championships in October.

The event is also serves as a massive fund raising campaign supporting Right to Play, an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world.  Last year the series raised over $250,000 and this year the fundraising goal has been set at $300,000.

If the City Chase sounds like a challenge you would like to take part in you can still register online until midnight on Friday, June 10.

To read more about the event including rules and regulations, FAQ's, registrations and of course additional information about Right to Play, click on the links to go to the City Chase and Right to Play websites.

For all you diehard "garage saler's" out there, mark this Saturday on your calendar and get up early as the Citadel Community Parade of Garage Sales is set to go from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

You may very well need all seven hours to hit all the participating houses as there are over 50 registered individual sales spanning the entire community.  You never know what treasures...and yes, of course trash, you will find which is what makes the whole process enjoyable!

After the garage sale fun is completed, there will be a community spirit event at West Citadel Park on the corner of Citadel Way and Citadel Bluff from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM.  The event features free hot dogs, chips, pop & water, appearances by the Calgary Fire Department and Police Services, a bouncy house and lots of music.

So come out and enjoy the day and the forecast good weather...and if you get here early, I'll giove you first dibs on my custom macramé beer cozies!

For more information and a community map click on the link below to go to the Citadel Community website.

A busy event weekend in NW Calgary as the Annual Stampeders Fanfest is set to go on Saturday, May 28.  The event has been moved indoors to the Viper Dome, located adjacent to McMahon Stadium, due to the unseasonal 'Vancouver-ish' weather forecast.
The day kicks-off at 8:30 AM with a pancake breakfast in the East parking lot of McMahon Stadium, the Stamps Store opens at 9:00 AM and doors to the main event at the Viper Dome open up at 9:30 AM and festivities run until 2:00 PM.
Fans of all ages will be able to meet, take photos with and get autographs from players, coaches, the Outriders and Quick Six, the Stamps touchdown horse...OK, maybe no autographs from Quick Six, but you get the idea.  Thje Grey Cup will also be on hand for fans to get their photo with and there will be a collection for the Slave Lake relief efforts.
Once again, for all the information on the event, click on the link below to go to the Stampeders website and the official event page.

Another great Best of Calgary NW event is taking place this weekend as the Calgary Bike Swap is set to go on Saturday, May 28 at the West Hillhurst Community Association.
The swap is a unique event that showcases hundreds of used bikes consigned from local sellers in one mad scramble setting.  Last year over 85% of the bikes were sold within the first hour and by the end of the event, just under 90% of the bikes found new owners.
Doors open for buyers at 12:30 PM and the sale runs until 4:00 PM; so obviously if you are looking to pick up a bike at a great price, be there early!
If you are looking to sell your bike (in good working order of course), arrive at the community association between the hours of 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM, a tech will do a quick rundown on your wheels and then you can register your ride for inclusion in the sale.  There are fees for sellers dependant on the price of your bike.
For all the information and details on the event, click on the link below to go to the official event webpage.

Another Best of NW Calgary Spring opening to announce as Calaway Park is set to kick off their 2011 season on Friday, May 21.  This year will represent a milestone for the park as they enter their 30th year of operation.

I have many fond memories of Calaway Park; from the opening season, to the Gowan concert (yes, I went and it was great), right up to a few seasons ago taking my kids there for the first time and being very impressed with the cleanliness, friendliness and overall operation of the facility.

Calaway has grown from a small facility in 1981 with just 14 rides and attractions into Western Canada’s largest outdoor family amusement park boasting 34 rides, 23 food locations, 25 skill-testing games and 4 attractions.  This year’s new addition is the scream-producing Mind Blaster ride that will roll, spin and thrill the most adventurous ride enthusiasts.

For all the information about opening weekend, amenities and events as well as day and season pass prices visit the official Calaway Park website by clicking the link below.

Most importantly, have fun and remember; if you’re sitting at the front of the Shoot the Chutes ride - duck at the bottom and soak everyone behind you!

Another great Best of Calgary NW event as Cavalia comes to Canada Olympic Park!

If you haven’t watched the 6 o’clock news, read the paper or driven by C.O.P. in the past few weeks you may be among the small group of people in Calgary who do not know that this groundbreaking production has pitched their tents (literally) and is scheduled to premiere its unique multimedia performance on Wednesday, May 25.

This massive extravaganza features 49 horses representing 10 different breeds, 33 international performers, a 210 foot wide screen providing the backdrop for the projections and special effects  and a 160 foot wide stage all coming together under a 110 foot tall (equivalent to a 10-storey building) white top tent.

The Calgary run consists of 25 shows running through Sunday, June 19.  For a full show time schedule, ticket prices, ticket purchase and more information about this spectacular production visit the official Cavalia website by clicking the link below.
