The weather has finally agreed to smarten up and it looks like it's just in time for this weekend's numerous Canada Day events and celebrations!

The big event The Best of Calgary NW is of course focusing on is the official start to the 2011 Calgary Stampeders regular season as our hometown heroes take on the Toronto Argonauts.  It's a clash of last season's lowest-scoring team vs. the league's highest scoring squad...you know which side of the scale we were on.  Despite the anemic scoring stats the Boatmen did turn things around last season sporting an even 9-9 record and splitting their two games with the Stamps, so coming out of the gate fresh it will be a good test for Hufnagel and company.

If the attraction of the Big Red Machine stomping all over the Double-Blue isn't incentive enough, then make sure to make a day of it and come out to the Canada Day Kickoff Pre-Game Bash open to all ticket holders and taking place across the parking lot at Foothills Stadium from 4-6 PM.

The Pre-Game Bash has all the required ingredients for a great afternoon; live music, great BBQ, the Outriders and Stampeders Alumni appearances.  Your only way into the party is with your game day ticket so if you don't have one go out and get yourself one!

For more information about the mathcup, the pregame festivities and tickets click on the link below and visit the Stampeder official website.

The start of another busy season at McMahon Stadium is upon us as the Calgary Stampeders take to the turf for their first pre-season action of the year against the BC Lions.

The Stampeders finished the year in first place at 13-5 while the Leos needed a three-game wiining streak to end the year finishing at 8-10 and laying claim to the third playoff spot in the West.  But as always, last year is forgotten and as of right now everyone is in first place...and they still will be after the game is over for that matter.

It will be a great chance to view some of the key battles for positions on both sides of the ball and of course the first chance to see some excellent live CFL action.

Kickoff is at 7 PM and tickets are available.  For more infrormation about the game, tickets and the marquee positional battles coming out of training camp click on the link to go to the Stampeders game preview page.

Another great event is happening this weekend as the 2011 Mitsubishi Motors Calgary City Chase goes on Saturday, June 11.  The event starts and finishes at Eau Claire, which is obviously not in the NW, however the chase itself will undoubtedly travel through our quadrant of the city throughout the course of the day.

The City Chase is a unique 4-6 hour urban adventure where 2-person teams will run, walk and use public transit to navigate their way throughout the city, while calling family and friends for help, accessing the Internet, and even employing assistance of total strangers.  Teams must rely on their resourcefulness, determination and quick-thinking as they search for ChasePoints scattered in unknown locations throughout the Calgary. ChasePoints are designed to test teams with a variety of physical, intellectual, adventurous and of course, humorous challenges.

The first team to complete the required ChasePoints and cross the finish line wins the event and earns the right to represent Calgary at the City Chase National Championships in October.

The event is also serves as a massive fund raising campaign supporting Right to Play, an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world.  Last year the series raised over $250,000 and this year the fundraising goal has been set at $300,000.

If the City Chase sounds like a challenge you would like to take part in you can still register online until midnight on Friday, June 10.

To read more about the event including rules and regulations, FAQ's, registrations and of course additional information about Right to Play, click on the links to go to the City Chase and Right to Play websites.

Another great Best of Calgary NW event is taking place this weekend as the Calgary Bike Swap is set to go on Saturday, May 28 at the West Hillhurst Community Association.

The swap is a unique event that showcases hundreds of used bikes consigned from local sellers in one mad scramble setting.  Last year over 85% of the bikes were sold within the first hour and by the end of the event, just under 90% of the bikes found new owners.

Doors open for buyers at 12:30 PM and the sale runs until 4:00 PM; so obviously if you are looking to pick up a bike at a great price, be there early!

If you are looking to sell your bike (in good working order of course), arrive at the community association between the hours of 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM, a tech will do a quick rundown on your wheels and then you can register your ride for inclusion in the sale.  There are fees for sellers dependant on the price of your bike.
