New Home Inspection Regulations Take Effect
For anyone who may have forgotten, September 1st marks the first day of the new Alberta licensing requirement for resale home inspectors. The guidelines, announced in May, include minimum levels of education and insurance as well as specific inspection criteria.
There have long been appeals from all sides of the issue; homebuyers, inspectors and Realtors, to introduce regulations as the property inspection industry has essentially operated without any official government guidelines.
For more information, click on the links below to for more information about the new regulations and licensing standards and what it means for the industry and the individual homebuyer.
GOVERNMENT OF ALBERTA NEWS RELEASE
Calgary Ranks as 5th Most Liveable City in the World.
The annual list ranking the liveability of 140 cities across the globe was just released and once again Calgary has cracked the top 5. This year Vancouver was knocked out of the top position for the first time in almost a decade as the coastal city fell to the number three spot ousted by Melbourne, Australia. Vienna, Austria took the second place spot followed by the three Canadian cities, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary, to round out the top 5.
The rankings are based on the criteria of stability, education, healthcare, infrastructure and culture-environment. Calgary scored perfect 100’s for education, healthcare and stability and ranked in the 90’s for all categories aside from culture-environment with a score of 89.1. As subjective as an international ranking process may be, it is certainly never a bad thing to near the top of the list.
The continuation of our high global ranking by a respected international source helps solidify Calgary’s international appeal as a desired place to live and work and certainly can’t hurt our immigration rate, which in turn has a direct effect on the local real estate market.
Congratulations cowtown and to all of the other great Canadian cities that made the grade. Let’s continue to build Calgary into the cultural, economic and quality metropolitan area we all envision and hopefully Melbourne will be looking up at us in the years to come.

MEC Calgary Bikefest this Saturday!
Another great Best of Calgary NW outdoor event is set for this weekend as the Mountain Equipment Co-op Bikefest Calgary goes at Edworthy Park on Saturday from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
As described by MEC the event is “a daylong community celebration of all things bicycle related. Our goal is to bring together Calgary’s bicycle community and those new to bikes, to celebrate the wonders of cycling. Come join us and make it the best bicycle bash in Calgary.”
Included in the day’s festivities are events and activities for every age and skill level of biking enthusiasts:
- Demo bikes
- Bike decorating crafts for kids
- Free riding clinics with local cycling clubs
- Bike Swap
- Bike tune-ups
- Self-guided cycling scavenger hunt
- 101 info sessions: touring, racing, fitness, etc.
- Prizes (including a MEC skyway bike!)
The event is completely free...unless of course you buy something (come on, nothing is completely free!), and is scheduled to go rain or shine so let’s hope there is more shine than rain. You don’t need to have a bike to participate as there will be bike-less activities and of course demo bikes to take a spin on as well.

Mitsubishi Motors Calgary City Chase
Another great event is happening this weekend as the 2011 Mitsubishi Motors Calgary City Chase goes on Saturday, June 11. The event starts and finishes at Eau Claire, which is obviously not in the NW, however the chase itself will undoubtedly travel through our quadrant of the city throughout the course of the day.
The City Chase is a unique 4-6 hour urban adventure where 2-person teams will run, walk and use public transit to navigate their way throughout the city, while calling family and friends for help, accessing the Internet, and even employing assistance of total strangers. Teams must rely on their resourcefulness, determination and quick-thinking as they search for ChasePoints scattered in unknown locations throughout the Calgary. ChasePoints are designed to test teams with a variety of physical, intellectual, adventurous and of course, humorous challenges.
The first team to complete the required ChasePoints and cross the finish line wins the event and earns the right to represent Calgary at the City Chase National Championships in October.
The event is also serves as a massive fund raising campaign supporting Right to Play, an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world. Last year the series raised over $250,000 and this year the fundraising goal has been set at $300,000.
